சத்ததந்து என்றும் மன்னன் சிவனருளால் பல வரங்களைப் பெற்று தனக்கு நிகர் எவருமில்லை என வாழ்த்து வந்தான், அவனது செருக்கால் தான் சிவபெருமானுக்கு செய்த அர்ச்சனையே அனைத்திற்கும் காரணமென நினைத்தான். தான் ஒரு வேள்வி செய்ய எண்ணி தேவர்களையும், முனிவர்களையும் மேரு மலையடிவராத்திற்கு அழைத்து வேள்வி செய்யத் துவங்கினான். பின்னர் நான்முகனை அழைத்து "நீ வேள்வி செய் என்றான். இதனைக்கண்ட விஷ்ணு சிவபெருமானைத் தொழுதுதான் நீ குறைவில்லா செல்வத்தையும் எல்லா வளத்தையும் பெற்றாய்.

எனவே அவரை கண்டிப்பாக அழைக்க வேண்டு மென்றார். நான்முகனும், அதையே ஆமோதித்தார். பின் மற்ற அனைவருக்கும் இந்த யாகம் முறையற்றது என்றனர். இதனைக் கேட்ட சத்ததந்து மிகவும் ஆத்திரத்துடன் பற்களைக் கடித்து கோபப்பார்வைப் பார்தத்தான். இதனால் என்ன விளைவு ஏற்படுமோ என அனைவரும் பயந்தனர். இருப்பினும் அந்த வேள்வியை அவன் முடித்தான். இச்செய்தி நாரதர் மூலம் சிவபெருமானை அடைந்தது. கோபம் கொள்ளச் செய்தது இச்செய்தி. எனவே உடனே மண்டலத்தை தேராக்கி, உலகை சக்கரமாக்கி, அக்னியை வில்லாக்கி,சந்திரனை நாணாக்கி, வருணனை பாணமாக்கி, குமரனை தேரோட்டுபவனாக்கு போர்க் கருவிகளுடன் தன்னருகில் இருந்த வீரபத்திரரை நோக்கி சத்ததந்துவை அழித்து வரும்படி ஏவினார். அதற்கு அடிப்பணிந்த வீரபத்திரர் மேருமலையை அடைந்தார்.

இச்செய்தி தெரிந்த தேவர்குலம் நாலாபுறமும் சிதறித் தெரித்து ஒடினர். ஆனாலும் அனைவரையும் பிடித்து தான் நினைத்தபடி துன்புறுத்தினார். பின்னர் தனது வர்ணாஸதிரத்தால் வேள்வியை அழித்தார். உடன் சத்ததந்து கோப்பட, அவனையும் அகோர அஸ்திரத்தினால் கொன்றார். இவரது கோபத்தைக் கண்ட தேவ முனிவ, ரிஷிக்களின் மனைவியர் தங்கள் கணவரை தரும்படி வேண்ட, இறந்த வர பிழைந்தனர். பின் அவர்களை அவரவர்க்குரிய பதவியில் அமர்த்தினார். பின் வீரபத்திரர் சிவபெருமானிடம் சரணடைந்தார். அகோர அஸ்திரத்தினால் சத்ததந்து வேள்வியை அழித்துக் கொன்ற மூர்த்தமே "அகோர அத்திர மூர்த்தி எனப் பெயர் பெற்றது. இவரை திருவெண்காட்டில் காணலாம். இங்கு மட்டுமே இவரது திருவுருவம் உள்ளது.

மாசிமாத கிருஷ்ணபட்ச ஞாயிறு இரவு 12 மணிக்கு இவர் தேன்றினார். ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் இதே நேரத்தில் சிறப்பு பூஜை நடைபெறும். மேலும் ஒவ்வொரு ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை இரவும் அகோர பூஜை நடைபெறுகிறது. இதில் கலந்துக் கொள்ள அவரது பூரண அருள் நமக்குக் கிட்டும். மேலும் வில்வம் அல்லது செவ்வரளி அர்ச்சனையும், பால் நைவேத்தியமும் திங்கள், பிரதோஷம் அன்றுக் கொடுக்க பகைவர் ஒழிவர். நீண்டகால வழக்கு பைசலாகும். தம்பதியருடையே ஒற்றமை அதிகரிக்கும்.
