திருக்கைலையில் சிவபெருமானை தரிசிக்க திருமால், நான்முகன், இந்திரன் என அனைத்தும் தேவருலகத்தினரும் திரண்டிருந்தனர். அவர்களை வரிசைப்படி நந்தி தேவர் அனுப்பிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அனைவரும் பார்வதி தேவியையும், சிவபெருமானையும் தனித்தனியாக வணங்கி வேண்டும் வரங்களைப் பெற்றுச் சென்றனர். பின்னர் வந்த முனிகுமாரர்களில் ஒருவரான பிருங்கி முனிவர் பார்வதி தேவியை சட்டைச் செய்யாமல் சிவபெருமானை மட்டுமே வணங்கிய படிச் சென்றார். இதனைக் கண்ணுற்ற பார்வதிதேவி அவரது உடலிலுள்ள சதையை தனது மூச்சுக் காற்றால் இழுத்துக் கொண்டார்.

இதனையும் சட்டை செய்யாத பிருங்கி முனிவர் எழும்பும் தோலுமாகவே சிவபெருமானை துதித்தார். சிவபெருமான் தன்னை மட்டும் வணங்கியதால் பார்வதிதேவியின் திருவிளையாடல் என்பதை புரிந்து மேலும் ஒரு காலை முனிவருக்கு வழங்கினார். முனிவர் அகன்றவுடன் பார்வதி தேவி தான் தவமியற்றப் போவதாகக் கூறி கைலாயத்தை விட்டு நீங்கி வினாயகன், முருகன், சப்த மாதர்கள் படைசூழ ஒரு மலைச்சாரலில் உறுதியான தூண் மீது நின்றவாறு தவம் இயற்றினார்.

கடுமையான உறுதியான தவத்தால் மகிழ்ந்த சிவபெருமான் தனது படைபரிவாரங்களுடன் தேவி தவமியற்றும் இடத்திற்கு வந்தார். உடன் அவர் தேவி உனக்கு என்ன வேண்டும் கேள் என்றார். உடன் தேவி இறைவா நான் தனியாகவும் நீங்கள் தனியாகவும் இருப்பதால் தானே இந்தப் பிரச்சனை. எனவே தங்களது இடபாகமாக நானிருக்கும்படியான வரத்தைத் தாருங்கள் என்றார்.

சிவபெருமானும் அவ்வாறே தந்து தனது இடப்பாகத்தில் தேவியை ஏந்தினார். வலப்பக்கம் சிவனுமாக, இடப்பக்கம் பார்வதியாக உள்ள திருக்கோலமே அர்த்த நாரீஸ்வர மூர்த்தி யாகும். அவரை தரிசிக்க நாம் செல்ல வேண்டிய தலம் திருக்கோடாகும். ஈரோடு அருகேயுள்ள இத்தலம் சிவபெருமானுடையது என்றாலும் இளைய பிள்ளையாரான முருகனுக்கு உகந்தது ஆகும். இங்குள்ள இறைவன் பெயர் அர்த்த நாரீஸ்வரர், இறைவி பெயர் பாகம்பிரியாள் என்பதாகும்.

ஆணாகவும், பெண்ணாகவும் இங்குள்ள இறைவன் காட்சியளிக்கிறார். கணவன் - மணைவி இருவரும் ஒருவர்க்கு ஒருவர் விட்டுக் கொடுத்து வாழவும், குடும்பத்தில் ஒற்றுமை, அமைதி நிலவவும் இந்த மூர்த்தியை வணங்கினால் கைகூடும். வில்வ, தும்பை, கொன்றை மலர் அர்ச்சனையும், சர்க்கரைப் பொங்கல் (அல்லது) நெய்யன்ன நைவேத்தியமும், திங்கள், பிரதோஷ, பௌர்ணமி தினங்களில் கொடுக்க பிரிந்த தம்பதியர் ஒன்று சேர்வர் என்பது ஐதீகம். மேலும் இங்குள்ள சிவபெருமானுக்கு பசும்பால் அபிசேகம் செய்தால் குடும்பம் ஒற்றுமையுடன் காணப்படும்.
