சலந்தரவத மூர்த்தி

தேவலோகத்தரசனான இந்திரன் திருக்கைலைக்குச் சென்று சிவபெருமானை வணங்கிவர கிளம்பினார். வழியில் சிவபெருமான் உருமாறி நின்றிந்தார். இதை கண்ட இந்திரன் அவரிடம் பலவிதமானக் கேள்விகள் கேட்டார். எதற்கும் பதில் கொடுக்காமல் இருந்தபடியால் இந்திரன் சிவபெருமானை தன்னுடைய வச்சிராயுதத்தால் அடித்தான். அது தவிடுபொடியானது, இதனால் கோபமடைந்த சிவபெருமான் ருத்ரவடிவம் கொண்டார். உண்மை அறிந்த இந்திரன் பயந்துப்போய் அவரிடம் மன்னிக்க வேண்டினார். எனவே கோபம் அடக்கினார்.

அப்பொழுது கோபத்தால் உண்டான வியர்வையை வழித்தெடுத்தார். அது கடலில் விழ, அதுவொரு குழந்தையானது. அதனை கடலரசன் எடுத்து வளர்த்தான், அக்குழந்தையின் பெயர் சலந்தரன் ஆகும். சலந்தரன் வளர்ந்தவுடன் அசுரர்களுடன் சேர்ந்து பலவகையான ஆற்றல்களைப் பெற்றான். பின் தேவலோக தச்சனான மயனின் மேற்பார்வையில் ஒரு அழகிய தேரை உருவாக்கினான். அதன்பின் விருத்தை என்பவளை மணந்து வாழ்ந்து வந்தான். ஒருமுறை தேவர்களுடன் போரிட முடிவு செய்து மேருமலைக் சென்றான். அங்கிருந்த தேவர்கள் பயந்து திருமாலிடம் கூறினர்.

திருமால் சலந்தரனுடன் இருபதினாயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் போரிட்டும் முடிவில் சலந்தரனே வென்றான் திருமாலின் பாராட்டையும் பெற்றான். இந்திரன் பயந்துக் கொண்டு திருக்கைலையிலேயேத் தங்கினான். இந்திரனின் இச்செயலைக் கேள்வியுற்ற சலந்தரன் திருக்கைலைச் சென்றான். இதற்கிடையே இந்திரனின் பயத்தைப் போக்கிய சிவபெருமான் சலந்தரனை அழிப்பதாக வாக்குறுதிக் கொடுத்தார். அதன்படி வயதான முனிவர் போல் தளர்ந்த உடல், கையில் கமண்டலம், தடியை ஊன்றிய படி சிவபெருமான் மாறினார். அவரது சேனைகள் அவர் பின்னால் நின்றன.

சலந்தரனை வழிமறித்த சிவபெருமான் அவனைப் பற்றி விசாரித்தார். சலந்தரன் தன்னைப் பற்றியும் தன்தகப்பனைப்பற்றியும் கூறி சிவபெருமானுடன் போரிட வந்துள்ளதாகக் கூறினான். சிவபெருமானும் சிரித்துக் கொண்டே சிவனை எதிர்த்தால் ஒரு நொடியில் மாள்வாய் என்றார். சலந்தரன் அவரிடம் தன் ஆற்றலைக் காட்டினான். உடனே வயதான தோற்ற சிவபெருமான். நான் சிவனுக்கு அடுத்தநிலை உள்ளவன் எனவே இந்த சக்கரத்தை உன்தலையில் வை பார்ப்போம் என்றபடியே தனது பாதத்தால் தரையை கீறி ஒரு சக்கரத்தை உண்டாக்கினார்.

உடனே சலந்தரன் அதை எடுத்து தலைமேல் வைக்க அது அவனை இருகூறாக்கியது. பின் சிவனிடம் தஞ்சமடைந்தது. பின் அசுரக்கூட்டத்தை சாம்பலாக்கினார். சலந்தரன் அழிந்ததால் அனைவரும் ஆனந்தப்பட்டனர். அவரவர் பதவியை மீண்டும் வகித்தனர். தேவர்கள் துயர்துடைக்க சலந்தரனை வதம் செய்த மூர்த்தியே சலந்தரவத மூர்த்தி யாவார். இவரை தரிசிக்க நாம் செல்லவேண்டியத் தலம் திருவாருர் அருகேயுள்ளள திருவிற்குடி யாகும். இறைவன் வீரட்டானேஸ்வரர் இறைவி பரிமளநாயகி. இங்குள்ள சங்கு, சக்கர, ஞானதீர்த்தங்களினால் சலந்தரவத மூர்த்தியை அபிசேகம் செய்ய அவர்களின் தீராத துயரத்தினையும் தீர்த்து மஞ்சள்நிற மலர் அர்ச்சனையும், புளிசாத நைவேத்தியமும் செவ்வாயன்றுக் கொடுக்க விஷப்பூச்சிகள் அரவம் இவற்றினால் ஏற்படும் தொல்லை அழியும்.
