Chanda Tandava Murthy (சண்ட தாண்டவ மூர்த்தி) is a fierce form of Lord Shiva, where he performs the Chanda Tandava, a violent and intense cosmic dance. The word "Chanda" means "fierce" or "violent," and "Tandava" refers to Shiva's powerful and dynamic dance, which is often associated with destruction. திருவாலங்காட்டில் மகிமையை உணர்ந்த சுனந்த முனிவர் அங்கு தாண்டவ நடத்தைக் காட்ட வேண்டிய தவமியற்றினார். அப்போது சிவபெருமானின் கைவிரலில் உள்ள பாம்பு அவரது திருவிரலில் விஷம் கக்கியது. இதனைக் கண்ட இடபம் நீ செய்த தீமைக்காக திருக்கைலையை விட்டு நீங்குமாறு கார்கோடகனிடம் கூறியது.

கார்கோடகனும் பயந்து சிவனிடம் முறையிட்டது. உடன் சிவபெருமான் திருவாலங்காட்டில் தவமியற்றும் சுனந்தருடன் சேர்ந்து சண்டதாண்டவத்தை தரிசித்த உடன் கைலை வருவாயாக என்றார். திருவாலங்காடு சென்ற கார்கோடகன் சுனந்தருடன் சேர்ந்து தவமியற்றியது. அப்போது சும்பன், நிசும்பன் எனும் இரு அசுரர்கள் அனைவரையும் கொடுமைபடுத்தி வந்தார்கள். இதனைக் கண்ட தேவர்கள் பார்வதி தேவியிடம் முறையிட்டனர். பார்வதியும் சப்தமாதர்கள், சிவகணங்களுடன் சாமுண்டி என்ற சக்தியாக மாறி அவர்கள் இருவரையும் கொன்றனர். அவர்களிருவரின் சகோதரியான குரோதி என்பவளின் மகன் இரத்த பீசன்.

அவனது ஒவ்வொரு சொட்டு இரத்தமும் நிலத்தில் விழுந்தால் அதுவொரு இரத்தபீசனாக மாறீவிடும். இத்தகைய வரம் பெற்ற அவனை அழிக்க வேண்டி பார்வதி காளி தேவியை தோற்றுவித்தாள். காளி அவனது ஒரு சொட்டு இரத்தம் கூட நிலத்தில் சிந்த விடாமல் பருகினாள். போர் நல்லபடியாக முடிந்தது. பார்வதி சண்டியாகிய காளி தேவி சிவபெருமானிடம் நடனம் செய்து அவருடன் வசிக்கும் வரத்தையும் வழங்கிவிட்டு சென்றார்.

அசுரனின் மாமிசத்தையும், இரத்தத்தையும் குடித்ததால் காளிதேவி யாருக்கும் அடங்காமல் வனங்களில் அரசாட்சி புரிந்து வந்தார். அவ்வாறே திருவாலங்காடு வந்து சேர்ந்தார். அங்கு வந்த காளி அட்டகாசத்தை ஆரம்பித்தார். இச் செய்தி முனிவர் மூலம் நாரதரிடம் தெரிவிக்கப் பட்டது. நாரதர் மூலம் சிவபெருமானிடம் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது.

சிவபெருமான் உடன் பைரவராக மாறி போர் புரிந்தார். காளி தேவி தோற்றுவிட்டார். தோற்றக் காளி நடனப் போர்புரிய பைரவரை அழைத்தார். பைரவரும் சம்மதித்து தேவர்களின் வாத்திய இசைக்கு ஏற்ப நடனம் ஆடினார். நவரசங்கள் ததும்ப இருவரும் சலைக்காமல் ஆடினர். இந்த சண்ட தாண்டவம் நடை பெறும் போது சிவனின் குண்டலம் கீழே விழ, அதைத்தன் காலால் எடுத்துக் காதில் பொருத்தினார் போட்டியாக ஆடிய காளி வெட்கத்துடன் தன் தோல்வியை ஒப்புக்கொண்டார்.

காளியின் செருக்கும் அழிந்தது. சுனந்தர், கார்கோடகன், உற்பட அனைத்து தேவர், முனிவர்களும் எல்லாக் காலமும் காணும்படி தாண்டவக் கோலத்தை அருளினார். இக்காரணத்தால் அவரை சண்ட தாண்டவ மூர்த்தி என்கிறோம். கும்பகோணம் பேருந்து நிலையம் அருகேயுள்ளது கீழ்க் கோட்டம். இறைவன் பெயர் நாகநாதர், இறைவி பெயர் பெரியநாயகி ஆவார். இங்குள்ள நடராஜ மண்டபத்தை நாம் பேரம்பலம் என்போம்.

இங்கமைந்த மூர்த்தியை வணங்கி சிவ தியானம் செய்தால் தாண்டவ ஒலியைக் கேட்கலாம். முல்லைப்பூ அர்ச்சனையும், வெண்சாத நைவேத்தியமும் சோமவாரங்களில் கொடுத்தோமானால் நடனம், பாட்டு, நட்டுவாங்கம், என அனைத்தும் கைவரும். மேலும் இங்குள்ள மூலவரை கும்பநீரால் அபிசேகம் செய்து வழிபட்டால் பிறவிப் பயன் பெறமுடியும்.
