ஐம்படைகளையும் கையில் ஏந்திக் கொண்டும் பாற்கடலில் தன்தேவியருடனும், பாம்பாணையில் அமர்ந்திருக்கிறார் திருமால். இவர் தேவராலும் போற்றப்படவர் இவர்க்கு ஒருமுறை சிவதரிசனம் செய்ய வேண்டி தனது வாகனமான கருடன் மீதேறி வான்வழியே சிவபெருமான் வீற்றிருக்கும் திருக்கைலைச் சென்றார். அங்கே நந்தி தேவனின் அனுமதியுடன் உட்சென்றார். கருடன் வெளியே இருக்கலானான். உள்ளே சிவனார் நீலகண்டமும், முக்கண்களுடன், மான் மழு, வரத, அபய முத்திரை கொண்ட சதுர்புஜங்களுடன், கங்கையில் கொன்றை மலரை அணிந்து சடாமுடியுடன் அர்த்தநாரீஸ்வரராக நவரத்தினங்கள் இழைக்கப்பட்ட மேடையில் வீற்றிருக்கிறார். இக்காட்சியைக் கண்ட அனைவரும் அவரை ஆராதித்தனர்.

திருமால் உட்சென்று நெடுநேரமாகியும் திரும்பவராததால் கருடன் உட்செல்ல முயன்றது, அதற்கு நந்திதேவர் அனுமதி கொடுக்கவில்லை. இதனால் கோபம் கொண்ட கருடன் நந்திதேவரைப் பார்த்து என்னை தடுக்க நீயார், நீயே சுடலையாடியின் வாகனம், உன்னை விரைவில் கொல்வேன் என்றது. இதனைக் கேட்ட நந்திதேவர் ஆழ்ந்து தன் மூச்சை இழுத்தும், வெளியிட்டும் வந்தது. அக்காற்றில் அகப்பட்ட கருடன் நிலைத் தடுமாறியது.

திருமால் தான் தன்னைக் காப்பவரென்னி இறைவா பாற்கடல் வண்ணா என்னைக் காக்க வேண்டும் என்றுக் குரல் கொடுத்தது. சிவதரிசனம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்த திருமாலின் காதில் விழ, அவர் சிவபெருமானிடம் வேண்டினார். கருடனை மன்னித்து நந்திதேவர் வெளியிடும் படி அதற்கு செவி சாய்த்த சிவபெருமான் நந்திதேவருக்கு கட்டளையிட்டார். சிவபெருமானின் கட்டளைக்கு குற்றுயிரும் குலையுயிருமான கருடனை விடுவித்தார். கருடன் தன் கர்வம் அடங்கி பின் பழையபடி திருமாலுடன் பாற்கடல் சென்றது. நந்திதேவரால் துன்புற்ற கருடனுக்கு உதவியதால் சிவபெருமானுக்கு கருடன் அருகிருந்த மூர்த்தி என்ற பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது.

குடந்தை - ஆவுர் செல்லும் வழியில் உள்ளது பட்டீஸ்வரம். இறைவன் பெயர் பட்டீஸ்வரநாதர் இறைவி பெயர் பல்டனைநாயகி யாகும். இங்கு நந்தியனைத்து சிறிது விலகியவாறு அமைந்துள்ளது. என்னக் காரணமெனில் சம்பந்தர் வெளியே நின்றவாறு வழிபட நந்தி வழிவட்டு விலகியது என்றுக் கூறுவர். இறைவனுக்கு தும்பை மலர் அர்ச்சனையும் வெண்பொங்கல் நைவேத்தியமும் சனிக்கிழகைளில் கொடுக்க செல்வ செழிப்புண்டாகும். புகழ், அறிவு சார்ந்த மதிநுட்பம் கிடைக்கும்.
